Chiropractic: The Answer for a Healthy Pregnancy and Healthy Baby!

Chiropractic care is often overlooked during pregnancy but it can be one of the best options to ensure a healthy mother, an easier labor and healthy baby. Learn what chiropractic care can do for you!

A healthy spine is essential for optimum health, and critical for a healthy pregnancy, labor, and delivery. Physical changes in the body during pregnancy can adversely affect the spine and consequently, the nervous system. This is a problem both mechanically and physiologically – for both mother and baby.

The human spine is made up of 24 moveable bones, plus the sacrum, pelvis, and skull. These bones surround and protect the brain, brainstem, spinal cord, and nerves. In order for the brain to control every function in the body, it sends messages down through the spinal cord and out the nerves to our organs. When the spine misaligns, this is called a subluxation, and this serious condition puts pressure on the nerves and interferes with the brain’s ability to control our organs. This leads to organ dysfunction.

Pregnancy takes a toll on a mother’s spine. As pregnant women gain weight in their abdomen, this puts increasing pressure on the lower spine, causing it to shift forward and down. This causes subluxations in the spine, and also leads to pain and discomfort. As labor draws near, the body increases its production of the hormone relaxin, which loosens the ligaments and allows the pelvic bones to expand. This can also exacerbate pre-existing subluxations elsewhere in the spine. Furthermore, increasing breast size during pregnancy causes subluxations in the upper spine as well.

Research over the last decade supports chiropractic as a means of promoting easier pregnancy and delivery. One study showed reduced labor times in patients undergoing chiropractic care throughout pregnancy. Of those women in their first pregnancy, patients saw an average 24% shorter labor duration. Of those women in their 2nd or 3rd pregnancies, there was a 39% reduction in labor duration.[1. Fallon J. International Chiropractic Association. 1994 – Arlington, Virginia.]  Another study showed a 50% decrease in the need for pain medication during labor in those patients undergoing chiropractic care.[2. Frietag P. Expert testimony of P Freitag MD PhD., comparing the results of two neighbouring hospitals, US District Court Northern Illinois Eastern Division, No.76C 3777. May 1987.]  Additionally, another study reported 84% of participants undergoing chiropractic care during pregnancy saw relief from back pain associated with their pregnancies.[3. Bery G, Hammar M, Moller-Nielsen J et al. Obstet and Gynecol, 72:71-75, 1988.]

She should also seek council on maximizing her nutrient intake to ensure the developing baby receives everything it needs while in the womb. Exercise is also a necessity to maintaining lean muscle that will aid in labor and delivery. Finally, avoiding toxins in household cleaners, personal care products, and food and water is essential for a healthy pregnancy and baby.
