Aging Without Aging Diseases
It’s a common belief that people will develop arthritis and other diseases as they age, and that’s just part of growing old. Maximized Living doesn’t accept that truism and below we offer a different perspective on aging.
Aging and arthritis stereotypically go hand in hand and affects men and women of all ages, however, of all the types of this condition, osteoarthritis (OA) specifically affects individuals over 45 years old. According to the Arthritis Foundation, 27 million Americans suffer from osteoarthritis. OA is characterized by the breakdown of cartilage – the part of a joint that cushions the ends of the bones and allows easy movement. As cartilage deteriorates, bones begin to rub against one another. This can cause stiffness and pain that make it difficult for you to use that joint. Osteoarthritis can also damage ligaments, menisci and muscles.[1. Arthritis Foundation. 2011] Although this affects millions of individuals, it doesn’t have to be that way and there are proven methods to assure that it doesn’t happen to as many people as it actually does.
Research has shown that not only osteoarthritis, but Rheumatoid Arthritis can be positively affected by food and exercise. Proper nutrition and exercise have far better benefits than supplementation and anti-inflammatories ever could, which are the traditional treatments for these painful conditions. ABC News says that exercise, specifically those that engage the full body, help joint mobility, prevents loss of lean muscle, helps maintain strength, reduces pain and stiffness, and mobilizes stiff or contracted joints.[2. ABC News April 15, 2008] Once perceived as a terminal disease, osteoarthritis is now becoming easier and easier to overcome with the proper steps and actions.
Prostate cancer is one of the leading causes of death to men in our country ranking second only to lung cancer. One out of every six men will have the disease over the course of a lifetime. Let’s make sure that really sinks in. One out of six! According to the American Cancer Society, nearly 200,000 new cases are reported ever year. There is an urgent need to become aware of the danger and take action before crisis occurs. Fortunately, simple steps can prevent the disease and the answer is not in earlier detection, hormone therapy, surgical procedures or breakthrough medications.
Make Healthy Choices
Growing old does not have to be a stressful battle of racing against the clock to avoid inevitable disease. Simple healthy choices, the ability to learn, act accordingly and maintain good habits are much easier than you think.
The first step to overcoming this condition is alignment. This is an absolute no-brainer. Joints that are moving with proper biomechanical motion lubricate themselves, do not have stress points, and therefore do not have areas of pressure prone to breaking down. Second, take a look at the food you are putting in your body. Recent research published in Molecular Nutrition and Food Research suggests mounting evidence of consuming a diet loaded with healthy fats prevents your risk of prostate cancer. Foods like roasted vegetables, olive oil, eggplant, nuts, spinach, and a host of other healthy options are your best approach to maintain prostate health. The typical American diet loaded with chemicals, preservatives, toxins, and sugar not only causes diseases like prostate cancer, but leads to weight gain, brain fog, and lethargy.
One of the biggest nutritional step for arthritis is to address the essential fatty acids that you are consuming. Previous research shows that omega-3 fatty acids are important to decrease inflammation, but the more important thing to be aware of is the proper ratio of omega-6 to omega-3 fatty acids in order to optimize how your body processes them. The proper ratio should be 4:1 omega-6 to 3, but the standard American diet has sky rocketed that to over 20:1. By just taking omega-3 fatty acids and continuing to eat the same way will drive the ratio further apart.
