The Billion Dollar Birth Disaster
SSRIs and other medications to ‘treat’ depression can cause many health problems. Below, learn more about how these medications can harm your body, and what are healthy alternatives.
Serotonin re-uptake inhibitors (SSRIs) such as Prozac, Paxil, Lexapro and Zoloft have recently been linked to birth defects and spontaneous abortion. The new research concludes that expectant mothers taking antidepressants have an astounding 68% increase of miscarriage.[1. Nakhai-Pour, HR, Broy, P and Bérard, A. “Use of antidepressants during pregnancy and the risk of spontaneous abortion.” Canadian Medical Association Journal. July 2010. 182 (10).] This startling fact has not however curbed the prescription of these dangerous drugs to mothers with almost 4% of pregnant women taking them during their first trimester.
Overall, over 27 million Americans take SSRIs for depression. The dangers of these drugs are being uncovered almost everyday. For example, recently researchers announced their findings from a large study that taking SSRIs significantly raises the risk of stroke and death in women after menopause.[2. Wassertheil-Smoller, S. et. al. “Antidepressant Use and Risk of Incident Cardiovascular Morbidity and Mortality Among Post-Menopausal Women in the Women’s Health Initiative Study.” Archives of Internal Medicine. Dec. 2009.]
New reports have stated that Glaxo, the makers of Paxil, an anti-depressant, have agreed to pay one billion dollars to settle lawsuits against them. Over 800 families have sued Paxil because pregnant women who were taking the drug had babies that had serious birth defects. Glaxo also set aside an additional $1.4 billion to resolve litigation over Paxil and its Avandia diabetes drug. Several billion dollars are in litigation right now for people who have committed suicide while on Paxil, or attempted suicide. Despite hundreds of lawsuits, Glaxo still posted 11.7 billion in sales over the past nine years.[3. “Glaxo Said to Have Paid $1 Billion Over Paxil Suits.” Businessweek. July 2010.]
Most of the cases were babies who were born with serious birth defects. The reason that the doctors are not sued and not blamed for putting the mother on the drug leading to the defects is because Glaxo representatives never properly studied, nor advised doctors, about the risks and dangers of pregnant women on Paxil. The clinical trials for Paxil did not use pregnant women. It seems that with cases like this, we are just one big medical experiment designed to find the most effective and efficient way to fatten the pockets of the drug companies.
These drugs continue to come under more and more scrutiny. First, they discover that they [anti-depressants] cause suicide. Then it was discovered they cause aggression and even homicide. Now, it’s serious birth defects. What’s next?
Depression is a painful and often debilitating condition. So, it makes perfect sense that someone would reach out to any doctor or medication that could potentially ease that pain. Yet, clearly these meds aren’t an actual solution. Certainly, they don’t get to the root cause of the underlying complex problem.
Like with all common problems and conditions, what’s being done to prevent the problem? Waiting for any illness to arise before treating it always ends in pain and if medicines are used, there are always dangerous side-effects. A medicine without a side-effect is not a medicine.
To help and effectively deal with—or even better, prevent—depression, look right now at the common items taxing your neurology:
- Stress, lack of sleep
- Neurotoxins: artificial sweeteners, MSG, soy products
- Chemicals in your drugs, food, tap water, household cleaners, personal hygiene products, mold in your house, smoking, and silver fillings.
- Pressure on the nervous system from poor posture, forward head shift, scoliosis, spinal misalignment
- Lack of (the right kind of) exercise
- Missing nutrients in your diet
- Bad fats
- Refined grains
- Sleeping pills
- Excessive use of alcohol
Sound familiar? These are all as common as… depression. If these are part of your life, you’re either depressed already or on your way there. Switch over to a Maximized Living way of life and get on the path to a healthy brain.
